INTRODUCTION

Knocking front suspension is not uncommon on these cars, and if your knock seems to be coming from higher up than chassis level, chances are your topmounts will look like this:

A closer inspection will probably reveal a bearing seal that stopped sealing the bearing against the elements long ago, and a strut cover that is nothing more than a few rings of rubber at the bottom of your exposed strut.

Smooth steering and correct wheel alignment rely on the bearings inside the front topmounts, and if they have dried out and corroded, knocking, high speed wandering and adverse tyre wear will soon set in.
